Combining Heikin-Ashi with Bollinger Bands for Precision Swing Trades
Heikin-Ashi and Bollinger Bands are a effective combination for swing traders. Heikin-Ashi smooths out price action, while Bollinger Bands provide a dynamic measure of volatility. Together, they can help you identify high-probability entry and exit points with greater precision.
Entry Rules
This strategy focuses on trading "band walks," where the price trends along the upper or lower Bollinger Band.
- Long Entry: We look for a "squeeze" where the Bollinger Bands narrow, indicating a period of low volatility. The entry is triggered when a strong bullish Heikin-Ashi candle closes outside the upper Bollinger Band.
- Short Entry: We look for a squeeze, followed by a strong bearish Heikin-Ashi candle closing outside the lower Bollinger Band.
Exit Rules
- Initial Stop Loss: For a long position, the stop loss is placed below the middle Bollinger Band. For a short position, it's placed above the middle Bollinger Band.
- Trailing Stop Loss: We trail the stop loss along the middle Bollinger Band.
Profit Targets
We use a dynamic profit target based on the expansion of the Bollinger Bands. We take profits when the price touches the opposite Bollinger Band.
Stop Loss Placement
The stop loss is placed at the middle Bollinger Band, which acts as a dynamic support/resistance level.
Position Sizing
We use a 2% risk per trade.
Risk Management
- False Breakouts: We are cautious of false breakouts, where the price quickly reverses after breaking out of the Bollinger Bands. We wait for a second confirmation candle before entering a trade.
- Divergence: We look for divergence between the price and an oscillator like the RSI, which can signal a potential reversal.
Trade Management
We monitor our trades daily and adjust our trailing stop loss. We also pay attention to the width of the Bollinger Bands, as a narrowing of the bands can signal the end of a trend.
Psychology
This strategy requires patience, as you may have to wait for a while for a valid entry signal to form. It's important to be disciplined and not chase trades. When a valid signal does appear, you need to act decisively.
