Strategy #979

Micro Cap Catalyst Trade

Entry Logic

  • Exact Entry Trigger: A micro-cap stock (market cap < $300M) releases a transformative catalyst (e.g., major contract, clinical trial data).
  • Confirmation: The stock gaps up on massive pre-market volume.
  • Timeframe: 15-minute chart for the initial trend, 5-minute for entry.
  • Location Context: The stock is breaking out to multi-month or all-time highs.
  • Market Condition: Any, this is driven by company-specific news.

Exit Logic

  • Profit Target(s): These can be multi-baggers. Initial target is 50%, then trail.
  • Scaling Out: Sell 25% at 50%, 25% at 100%, and hold the rest for a potential home run.
  • Trailing Stop: The 50-period EMA on the 60-minute chart.
  • Signal Failure: The stock fails to hold its gap-up price and closes the gap.
  • Opposite Signal: The company announces a large, dilutive financing.
  • Time Expiration: Can be weeks or months.
  • Momentum Loss: The stock starts to form a clear topping pattern (e.g., head and shoulders) on the daily chart.

Stop Loss Structure

  • Hard Stop: 15% below entry.
  • Soft Stop: A close below the low of the gap-up day.
  • Maximum Dollar Loss: $1500 per trade.
  • Maximum Percent Loss: 15% of the trade value.
  • Structural Stop: Below the low of the gap-up day.

Risk Management Framework

  • Risk Per Trade: 0.5% of the account.
  • Maximum Daily Loss: Not applicable.
  • Maximum Weekly Loss: Not applicable.
  • Maximum Drawdown: 20% of the account.
  • R:R Requirement: Minimum 3:1.

Position Sizing Model

  • Sizing Approach: Use very small position sizes (e.g., 1/4 of a normal size).
  • Volatility Adjustment: Risk is managed via position size.
  • Conviction Sizing: Not applicable; all are extremely high-risk.
  • Scaling In: Can add on pullbacks to the 10-day EMA if the trend is strong.
  • Scaling Out: As per exit logic.

Trade Filtering

  • Market Conditions to Avoid: None, but be cautious.
  • Specific Setups: The catalyst must be truly transformative, not just a minor update.
  • Instrument Requirements: Micro-cap stocks, often in biotech or technology sectors.
  • Time Restrictions: The initial entry should be on the day of the news.
  • Chop/News Avoidance: The trade is based on news.

Context Framework

  • Trend Direction: The catalyst creates a new, powerful uptrend.
  • VWAP Relationship: Not the primary indicator.
  • MA Relationship: The move will be far above all moving averages.
  • Range Location: New highs.
  • Higher TF Alignment: The weekly and monthly charts will show a massive breakout.

Trade Management Rules

  • Breakeven: Move stop to entry after a 30% gain.
  • Scale Out: Take partial profits to de-risk, but aim to hold a core position for a large move.
  • Add Size: Cautiously on pullbacks.
  • Fast vs Slow Moves: Expect an initial fast move followed by a sustained trend.

Time Rules

  • Optimal Window: On the day of the catalyst.
  • Times to Avoid: Chasing the stock after it has already run 200%+.
  • Session Notes: The initial move is usually in the pre-market and morning session.

Setup Classification

  • A+ Criteria: A truly game-changing catalyst for a company with a very low market cap.
  • A Criteria: A strong catalyst that significantly improves the company's outlook.
  • B Criteria: A moderately positive catalyst.
  • C Criteria: Minor news or press releases.

Market Selection Criteria

  • Instruments: Micro-cap common stocks.
  • Volume/Liquidity: Liquidity will be very low before the catalyst and then explode.
  • Volatility: Extreme.

Statistical Edge Metrics

  • Expected Win Rate: 20-30%.
  • Average Win Size: 100-500%+.
  • Average Loss Size: 15-20%.
  • Profit Factor: 5.0+.
  • Expectancy: Extremely high due to the rare but massive winners.

Failure Conditions

  • Market Conditions: Not the primary factor.
  • Specific Scenarios: The market does not believe the catalyst is as transformative as it seems, or the company immediately uses the opportunity to raise capital.

Psychological Rules

  • Mental Discipline: Requires the ability to find these opportunities early, act on them, and then have the patience to hold through significant volatility for a life-changing gain.

Advanced Components

  • Market Regime Detection: Not applicable.
  • Filters: A deep fundamental understanding of the company and its industry is required to evaluate the catalyst.
  • Correlation: Not a factor.
  • MTF Alignment: Not applicable.

Location

  • Where Strongest: In innovative sectors like biotech, where a single event can change everything.
  • Where Weakest: In mature, stable industries.
